CAROLINA.OTF

[ DESCRIPTION ]                 Text typeface design inspired by Delia Owens novel, “Where the Crawdads Sing” which tells the story of Kya, an abandoned girl who raised herself to adulthood in the dangerous marshlands of North Carolina. For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” haunted Barkley Cove, isolating Kya from her community. Drawn to two young men from town, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world; but when one of them is found dead, she is immediately cast by the community as the main suspect. As the case unfolds, the verdict as to what actually happened becomes increasingly unclear, threatening to reveal the many secrets that lay within the marsh.

This typeface aims to capture a very honest story of resilience and survival as portrayed through Kya. Carolina typeface is a text serif typeface which features a tall x-height and wide letterforms, referencing the vastness of the marsh in which Kya found solace and called her home. The asymmetrical serifs provide an interesting rhythm while still maintaining legibility at both large and small scales. Squared serifs provide a strong foundation and sense of gravity to the letterforms which is a testament to Kya’s honesty and resilience. Additionally, the sharpness of tails and legs in certain glyphs speaks to a part of the human experience that is natural and ancient; the deeper side of us that is guided by instincts and the laws of nature, especially when we are threatened with survival.
